Dana Johnson was born in Vancouver and was completely consumed by art at an early age. In her 20’s she traveled to Europe and lived in London for a few years working in the publishing business and studying art part time. When she came back to Canada she studied fashion design at Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design graduating with the “Highest Achievement Award” in 1984. She designed and produced a line of clothing under her label “Dana Cleland” and sold to retail outlets across Canada. She was sponsored by the BC Government to showcase her collection at the Toronto Ready to Wear Show in Toronto in 1989 and at the Canadian International Womenswear Show in Montreal in 1990. During these years she also taught fashion design and illustration courses at Blanche MacDonald and Vancouver Community College. Eventually Dana decided to move on to her true passion and enrolled in a 2nd year painting course at Emily Carr and embarked on a journey in painting. Over the years she has participated in numerous group and solo shows. She is an active member of The Federation of Canadian Artists. Dana paints with acrylic on canvas in a rustic and textured style. The textured surface adds character and a sense of age to each subject from landscapes, trees, dresses and flowers. Recent visits to Italy, France, England and Spain have rekindled her passion for Europe and have been the inspiration for much of her work.
