Rene Sagastume - Artist Biography at Grey Area Gallery

Latin American painter, draftsman, illustrator and sculptor.

Sagastume was born in Honduras. He studied visual arts at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Tegucigalpa, Honduras from 1976 to 1979.  After graduating, he taught drawing and painting for sometime at secondary schools and began his artistic career in Honduras in the 1980s.  His work during this period dealt with social issues as an attempt to comment on his surroundings.

In 1989, Sagastume moved to Victoria,  British Columbia where he lived and worked for 17 years.  There was a turning point in Sagastume's work around the mid - 90's  when he started developing his completely personal, simple and bold approach to painting in which direct references to reality co-exist with allusions to humor, mood, drama, fantasy and personal history.

In 2006  he moved his studio practice to the Arc Studios in Vancouver.
