Using art experiences for rehab

Special event at Grey Area

Chilliwack’s Grey Area Gallery hosts a unique display next week produced by artists with brain injuries.

The Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association (FVBIA) uses art experiences to support rehabilitation for people with acquired brain injuries.

Members have worked under the guidance of local artists John LeFlock and Dawn Kerr, as well as professional photographer Stephan Baker.

Most recently, the group worked with LeFlock at Great Blue Heron Reserve’s art studio.

Painting a brighter future

Family hopes to raise funds for autism research.

It’s a self portrait with a purpose . . . just one 16-year-old Jesse Gemmell could never have known when she put paint to canvas more than five years ago.

Jesse’s stunning piece of art has been garnering rave reviews for years, ever since she created the masterpiece while a student at Cheam elementary. The painting then hung in the family home, never failing to draw the admiration and praise of those who saw it.

But a higher calling was still ahead. Along with her mom Kim, Jesse, who is autistic, is selling prints of the painting to help raise funds for autism research.

“Jesse was elated and it has helped her self-esteem,” says Kim about the decision to try and raise money through sales of the painting. “She loves the idea of supporting autism research because of all the help they have given our family.”

And while coming up with the fundraising idea was easy enough for Kim, life as a mother of two has been anything but. While Jesse was afflicted with autism, her youngest child, Avery, spent the first few years of his life clinging to life as he endured a number of heart surgeries…

Louisa and Jacquie from Grey Area are thrilled to be hosting an evening of original music by the very talented local group Lori Paul and Spiderlodge. The band consists of Lori Paul singing lead vocals, Rick Genge on guitar and Clay Thornton on drums. The proceeds for the event will be donated to Chilliwack’s S.P.C.A.

Grey Area Gallery is pleased to share our excitement for one of our featured artists Gary Haggquist, whose beautiful Sunnyside Series has made it to the pages of the May/June issue of BC Home magazine. The magazine takes us inside the life of an interior designer who, along with her architectural designer husband, owns a stunning home at Garrison Crossing in Chilliwack.

The article describes how Gary’s piece of Cultus Lake brings the living room together through its subject matter and colour palette. So exciting to see that BC Home magazine agrees that Gary Haggquist is the kind of artist that can be showcased in a home decor magazine focused on defining what is beautiful and unique in BC homes.
